Welcome to the Unofficial Online home of Maritime Model Clubs
Welcome to our new online home. This site is an endeavour to provide an online home for the various model clubs within the Maritime provinces of Canada. Currently, we have contributors from the Annapolis Valley Plastic Model Society, the Halifax Military Modellers Group, and the Capital Area Model Society (in Fredericton).
We invite you all as individuals, or as clubs to join us here and in the forums. All subjects and mediums for model building are welcome.
FLOOD Causes CAMS 08 to be rescheduled..

With regret, the crew of Capital Area Modellers Society had to reschedule CAMS 08. Looking at Scott Millican's photo of downtown Fredericton on the day before the show, I think we can all understand why. The Rain/flood date for CAMS is 7 JUNE 08 and it will be held at the St. Mary's Anglican Church Hall. Follow the link on the left for all of the required information: maps, registration info, list of sponsors, etc. See you at CAMS!
Shearwater Show a Success!
Doug Murray, Iain Matheson, with a lot of helping hands, put together an excellent Hobby show at the Shearwater Aviation Museum on the 5th and 6th of April. Of particular interest to Maritime Modellers was the very high quality of models on the competition table on Saturday (not to mention the tables full of excellent deals on models - both new and opened!).

The Skyraider took a first place in the 1/48 and larger category. This was my third attempt at this model as the other two suffered serious problems.
The Skyraider is one of my favorite planes. I like how much ordnance it can carry and the SEA camouflage scheme is my favorite. This model was intended for Atlanta 2 years ago but it never made it. Santa brought me all the aftermarket you can think of for it and I had a go at it but it was too complicated for me at the time. I was 13 and ruined most of the first two kits. This time I kept it simple and just took the seat from the detail sets. I also added Moskit exhausts but you need a flashlight to see them.
Two years ago I got Floyd Werner's DVD on model building for Christmas and I used a lot of the techniques he describes. I highly recommend it to anyone.
The Fw190 D-13 took a third in 1/72. Since I already had a first in that
category, I was surprised to get a third as well. Usually they only allow
one winner per category per person but checking their website, I have since seen where it has happened before. This was a Tamiya kit (as were all of them except the V-2) that I picked up for $10 at KC last summer. I added a Loon Models conversion from Roll Models to convert the kit D-9 to a D-13. A guy my dad dealt with a couple of years ago on Hyperscale gave me a gift of some Kommandeur decals and I wanted to do this paint scheme for a long time.
It is a very famous plane and the paint scheme is quite elaborate. I
actually tried a couple of years ago to paint this scheme on another model but my skills at the time weren't up to it. It sits in a box in my model graveyard! The canopy is wrong since I broke the canopy a couple of days before leaving. I had to steal one from a kit in the stash.
The V-2 is 1/35 scale and is a Dragon kit. Last year I took a first in KC
in the miscellaneous category with a V-1 so dad suggested I do a V-2 this year. It seemed appropriate! This looked like an easy build in the box. Not many parts but I found I had fit problems and had to do a lot of sanding. I re-srcibed the panel lines and but did not get them perfect and I used a small drill to do the rivets. I ended up painting this model multiple times due to my inattention to detail on the seams. I borrowed the "bible" on German rockets from the Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum and picked my paint scheme from it. The painting came out well but then I tries to add subtle detail with my airbrush and over did it in places. I repaired what I could and was just happy to say "that's it". It was one of those models that fought you all the way. This model took a second in the miscellaneous category.
The Mutt was started in the hotel room the night before CAMS. It was an easy build and once it was together, I painted it all in a day. I use
acrylics and they dry fast. I added MV lenses fro the head and tail lights.
They really look sharp. I really enjoyed this one as I never encountered any major problems. This one took a first in the Military vehicle category.
If you ever get a chance to attend an IPMS National convention you should. They always have a huge vendors room with all sorts of bargains,
tours, seminars and the big model show. Plus you get to meet lots of people and we now have model friends all over Canada and the USA. Its four days of heaven for people like us!!
